Practical Gardening volunteering

Who is it for?

Suitable for people who
  • are enthusiastic about gardening
  • can receive instruction and then work independently
  • want to help a community organisation
  • are able to work as part of a team

The farm also seeks to actively engage with people who experience racism and/or are from diverse ethnic heritage and underrepresented in mainstream culture, as well as individuals from deprived areas of the city.

Commitment (days and times)

You can volunteer weekly on one of the following days:

  • Tuesday afternoons 1:30pm – 4:30pm
  • Saturday Mornings 9.30am – 12.30pm

Main activities and tasks

Working in a group of around 6 – 8 people, you will help with:

  • Seasonal vegetable and flower growing tasks such as seed sowing, planting out and weeding.
  • Developing and maintaining areas of the garden to be used by our groups and for the enjoyment of visitor. This includes hedge cutting, pruning and path clearing.

Skills, experience and qualities you need

  • ability to work independently to complete tasks
  • ability to be part of a team and work with others to complete tasks
  • able to take own initiative
  • some experience of gardening desirable but not essential

This is ideal for someone who wants to learn more about gardening, get some exercise, meet new people and be part of a community.

Support and training

  • initial induction
  • support and training where appropriate
  • access to seasonal workshops
  • volunteer meetings with the opportunity to discuss project development with the CEO

The role will provide you with the opportunity to give something to the community and develop the farm while you improve your wellbeing.
