Split Hazel Basketry

Come and learn the endangered craft of split Hazel basketry, on this 1 day workshops with Florence Hamer. There is a rich history in the welsh borders and a few other places in the UK where hazel baskets are known to have been woven. During the course you will learn some traditional basketry techniques and make a ‘swallows nest’ basket.

The morning will be all about processing our materials, from the Hazel rods, and the afternoon will be all about weaving!

Suitable for beginners, we will be using some hand tools, such as knives and saws.

It is advised to wear suitable clothes for outdoor work, especially strong trousers. If you have any knee issues or issues with your hands, please let us know prior to booking so we can discuss the suitability of the course, for you.

About Florence Hamer:

Flo is a traditional craftswoman specialising in basketry and green woodworking. All her work is linked with a love of working with wood, in traditional techniques, and the desire to keep these endangered skills alive. Flo teaches a range of courses in traditional crafts, as well as being a full time maker. Working in materials such as willow, hazel, ash and oak. Winner of best Contemporary Basket 2023 in the ‘Basketry of the Year’ competition held by the Basketmakers Association. And shortlisted maker in the ‘Bespoke Product Design’ category in the 2023 ‘Wood Awards’.
